DUTIES OF THE SECOND OFFICER

  • The second officer shall perform duties as required such as those relating to navigational watch and cargo watch. (GBLT 0406-1)
  • To fix the position of ship, and perform other navigational calculations every day when the ships is underway and report the results to the Master.
  • To calculate voyage statistics at the end of the voyage and report the Master.
  • To help the Chief Officer in the supervision of cargo handling work.
  • Before leaving port and before shifting anchorage, to inspect the steering gear, check its maintenance, and check safety at the stern and the surroundings during engine trials.
  • To give instructions to crew manning at the stern of the ship during the mooring operation.
  • To perform maintenance of navigational instruments and steering gear.
  • To revise and maintain charts, pilots and other nautical publications, to enter in specific forms details of investigations relating to navigation, channels, harbours and weather conditions.
  • To maintain reference documents for navigation, channels, harbours and weather conditions, collect the latest navigation information, and report to the Master.
  • To enter records of important items that falls under the scope of responsibility, such as Deck Log Abstract, and maintain them.
  • To allocate work for maintaining navigational equipment and other duties of the Deck Department.
  • To perform the duties assigned by the Master.
  • To assist the Master on the poop deck with mooring work.
  • To keep inventory of the hospital and medicines on board.
  • To issue medicines to crewmembers when needed and after approval of master.
  • To give requisition to master if new medicines are required on board.
