Take care of correcting and maintenance for navigational charts, publications, notice to mariners and reference books, navigational aid instruments, Radio communications equipment、meteorological meters and their spare parts, make periodic inspections and examinations of these items in accordance with their instruction books as well as compile detailed records, meanwhile  

Responsible for equipment of the radio station, receive and send massages, endeavor to repair and maintenance of radio telegraphy installation aid instruments, strictly abide by the ITU and port regulations to keep watch in compliance with the prescribed hours, ensure the telecommunications go on smoothly without interruption and confusion, and make good records in the radio log book. Responsible for the direction and operation at the stern when the ship is arriving, departing or shifting in port, report in time to the Master about operating and surrounding of the stern, take care of safe turning of the propeller clear from obstacles and lines, also pay heed to the safety of all crew members at the stern. When on anchor watch, keep listening to the weather and be acutely aware of the surroundings. Frequently inspect the deck and cargo holds during loading, discharging or repairing, and understanding the rate of progress during cargo operation, if any damaged cargoes are found, should report to the Chief Officer at once and make a detailed record, frequently check bow lines and stern lines, gangway, crane, cooperate with the stevedores to ensure smooth working. Inspect closely the ship’s repair and pay attention to smoke or fire and prepare the fire fighting facilities and equipment during repairing. 

Before sailing, prepare and set a voyage plan in accordance with Master’s instruction, prepare all required navigation charts and relevant reference books, draw up the course and calculate the total distance to go, check and test with the duty engineer all the equipment inside the bridge, navigational aids and communication system and report to the Master on duty.

While on duty at sea, pay closely attention to the ship’s safety to avoid any collision, fill in “Noon Report” and deliver it to the Master and Chief Engineer, so as to be recorded in the Deck Log Book and Engineer’s Log Book, also fill in “Deck Abstract Log” when the voyage is completed and then submit it to the Master to forward to the company.

While un-employ Radio Officer Shipboard Receive weather report and meteorological on schedule during navigating at sea or at anchorage, if threatened by storm, strengthen watching and receive all storm warnings transmitted from all relevant coast radio station, no matter the ship is in navigating or anchoring till the warning completely cancelled. 

Take charge of the radio station batteries and be responsible for its maintenance and cleanliness as well as the charging and discharging of electricity at prescribed intervals. Ensure the batteries always in good condition, test the lifeboat radio apparatus every week to ensure they are in good working condition and make a record in the radio log book. 

Regularly maintenance and cleaning of all radio-telegraphy installations and pay attention to validity of the radiotelegraphy certificate, report to Master in time to arrange surveying , if meet the malfunction which can not be received by your own self, inform the Master to arrange repairs onshore and give assistance to repairer during the period of repairing.

Regularly maintenance, test and repair of navigational aid equipment and EPIRB, ensure all equipment in good working condition. In charge of medicine and medical apparatus management, periodically inspect the medicine to ensure the medicine enough and validity, and record detail. In charge of the initial treatment to crew’s injury/illness, according with the “Int’l Ship Medical Guide”, giving right medicine and record details, and report to Master. If need to see a doctor, shall be verified and arranged by Master, report to company with the “Doctor report”. When hand-over to the next successor, according with the form Second Officer Hand-over and Take-over Record list in detail the working status of the radiotelegraphy installations and apparatus, documents, inventory of spare parts, materials and tools, upon the approval and endorsement of both the radio officer and the Master. A copy should be sent to the company.
